Nodularia Spumigena What is Nodularia? Nodularia is a blue-green alga (also known as cyanobacteria). It produces chains of cells to form mostly straight filaments. Some cells are modified to have various functions, such as nitrogen-fixing cells (heterocysts). It also produces thick-walled resting stages called akinetes (spores).

Nodularia spumigena is a toxic, filamentous cyanobacterium occurring in brackish waters worldwide, yet forms extensive recurrent blooms in the Baltic Sea. N. spumigena produces several classes of non-ribosomal peptides (NRPs) that are active against several key metabolic enzymes. Previously, strains from geographically distant regions showed distinct NRP metabolic profiles. Nodularia spumigena is a bloom-forming, filamentous and N2-fixing cyanobacterium from the Nostocales order. This species occurs in many brackish waters worldwide, but most extensive blooms are reported in estuaries, lagoons and inland waters of Australia and New Zealand [1–3], and the One of the main bloom-forming species is the heterocystous cyanobacterium Nodularia spumigena. N. spumigena exhibits accelerated uptake of phosphate through the release of the extracellular enzyme alkaline phosphatase whose activity also serves as an indicator of the hydrolysis of dissolved organic phosphorus (DOP). Nodularia spumigena, a brackish water planktonic heterocytous cyanobacterium, has been responsible for major blooms along ocean coastlines, estuaries, brackish water basins, and saline lakes of the European, Australian/Oceania, and African continents [10–19].

Obtained pCO 2 levels in the treatments were on median 315, 353, and 548 μatm CO 2, respectively. Nodularia Spumigena What is Nodularia?

Nodularia spumigena

Nodularia spumigena is a filamentous nitrogen‐fixing cyanobacterium that forms toxic blooms in brackish water bodies worldwide. Spumigins are serine protease inhibitors reported from a single strain of N. spumigena isolated from the Baltic Sea. These linear tetrapeptides contain non‐proteinogenic amino acids including a C‐terminal alcohol derivative of arginine.

Nodularia spumigena is a toxic cyanobacteria that blooms in the Baltic Sea every year. In the brackish water of the Baltic Sea, its toxin, nodularin, mainly affects the biota in the surface water due to the natural buoyancy of this species.

The ecological role of nodularin in cyanobacterium Nodularia spumigena is still largely unknown, as are the conditions that promote toxin production. We report a modulating effect of mesozooplankton grazing on cellular nodularin content in N. spumigena expressed as a decrease in cell-bound toxin concentration in the presence of copepods compared with the cyanobacterium in similar assemblages Nodularia spumigena producerar mest gift när det är lite kväve i vattnet men tillräckligt mycket fosfor, säger Malin Mohlin på Institutionen för marin ekologi vid Göteborgs universitet. Det innebär till exempel att om avloppsvatten i huvudsak renas från kväve, kan det leda till mer gift i blomningarna. Nodularin is a potent hepatotoxin produced by the algal species Nodularia spumigena.
